Abstract: USED; HOWEVER, THEY SHOULD BE DRIVEN IN SOIL TO AN EMBEDMENT IT AS DESIGNED TO ANSWER SPECIFIC RESEARCH QUESTIONS BY EVALUATING KINEMATIC AND PHENOMENOLOGICAL RESPONSE OF THE POST CONFIGURATIONS UNDER CONDISERATION OVER THE FULL OPERATIONAL RANGE OF ALL SIGNIFICANT IMPACT PARAMETERS. A STRUCTURAL FRACTIONAL, FACTORIAL EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN WAS EMPLOYED. THE STUDY OF BASE-BENDING SINGLE SIGNPOSTS WAS THE INITIAL EFFORT OF A MULTIPHASE PROGRAM. PRIMARY DATA REDUCTION WAS BASED ON PHOTOGRAMMETRIC INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM THREE HIGH-SPEED CAMERAS. BACKUP INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED FROM A FIFTH WHEEL ATTACHED TO THE TOW VEHICLE AND SPEED TRAPS. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE TEST PROCEDURES AND TEST DATA ARE TABULATED. KINEMATIC RESPONSE WAS ASSESSED FROM DATA TAKEN FROM HIGH SPEED MOVIES BY OBSERVING A CONVENIENT TARGET ATTACHED TO THE SIDE OF THE CRASH VEHICLE. THE MAXIMUM DECELERATION CONCEPT IS DEFINED AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE POST DEFLECTION ANGLE IS DISCUSSED. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A METHOD OF ASSESSMENT OF PROBABLE OCCUPANT INJURY AND A CURVE ILLUSTRATING UNRESTRAINED OCCUPANT INJURY ASSESSMENT IS PRESENTED. BASED ON THE RESULT OF THE INVESTIGATION, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT USE BE MADE OF 2-INCH STEEL PIPE SIGNPOSTS DRIVEN TO AN EMBEDMENT DEPTH OF 3.5 FT IN SOIL. THE DESIRABLE MINIMUM SIGN POST HEIGHT ABOVE GROUND, IS 9 FEET. SINGLE 2.5 - INCH STEEL PIPE SIGNPOSTS AND SINGLE 8-POUND/FT FLANGED CHANNEL SIGNPOSTS ARE ADEQUATE HERE THE SINGLE 2-INCH SIGNPOST CANNOT BE
