THE HIGHWAY CORRIDOR AS A CONCEPT OF DESIGN AND PLANNING

Abstract:

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ROLE OF HIGHWAY PLANNING AND DESIGN WAS EMPHASIZED IN THE STATEWIDE STUDY PROGRAM IN WISCONSIN OF ITS NATURAL RESOURCES. THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE HIGHWAY CORRIDOR AS A PLANNING AND DESIGN CONCEPT ARE DISCUSSED. RECREATION AND TOURISM ARE RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE MOST RAPIDLY GROWING INDUSTRIES IN THE COUNTRY. THEREFORE, IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THE BASIC CULTURAL RESOURCES AND FEATURES IN OUR NATURAL AND CULTURAL LANDSCAPE SUPPORT THIS RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS DEVELOPED, COUNTY- BY-COUNTY ON A STATEWIDE BASIS' /1/ THE WATER AND WETLAND PATTERNS, /2/ THE 12 PERCENT SLOPE PATTERN, /3/ THE TIMBER PATTERN, AND /2/ CORRIDOR PATTERN WHICH RESULTS FROM BLOCKING OUT THESE FIRST THREE ELEMENTS. IT WAS DETERMINED FROM THE SPECIFIC RESOURCES THAT 90 PERCENT OF THESE HUMAN AND NATURAL VALUES LIE WITHIN THE CORRIDOR SYSTEM. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THESE NATURAL CORRIDORS BE PROTECTED AND MINIMUM FEATURES FOR OUTDOOR RECREATION BE PROVIDED. IT IS PLANNED THAT THE STATE PROGRAM OF LAND ACQUISITION WILL PROTECT THESE NATURAL RESOURCES.
