Abstract:

THE INTERSECTION OF TWO MAJOR HIGHWAYS CAN BE DESIGNED WITHOUT BRIDGES, IN SUCH MANNER THAT NO TRAFFIC NEEDS TO STOP OR DEVIATE FROM THE NORMAL SPEED. THIS DESIGN UTILIZES ALTERNATE ROADWAYS THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AREA WITH CROSSINGS AT GRADE CONTROLLED BY FIXED-TIME PROGRESSIVE TRAFFIC SIGNALS. THE DESIGN, TYPE OF SPECIAL SIGNAL CONTROL, SIGNAL TIMING, ANIMATED VEHICLE PROGRESSION THROUGH THE INTERSECTION ILLUSTRATING FREEDOM FROM CONFLICTS, SIGNAL PHASING, AND OTHER RELATED FACTORS ARE SHOWN. ALTHOUGH IT USES TRAFFIC SIGNALS, THIS DESIGN IS WORTHY OF CONSIDERATION IN COMPETITION WITH MAJOR GRADE-SEPARATED INTERSECTION TYPES. /AUTHOR/
