Abstract:

THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS WAS THE FIRST STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT TO USE ANALYTICAL TRIANGULATION AS A METHOD OF CONTROL EXTENSION AS A TOTALLY IN-HOUSE OPERATION. THIS PAPER DEALS MAINLY WITH THE MECHANICAL OPERATION AND THE GATHERING OF DATA RATHER THAN THE PROCESSING OF THESE DATA IN AN ELECTRONIC COMPUTER. THE PROCESS DESCRIBED USES A WILD PUG-3 TO TRANSFER AND MARK POINTS AND A MANN MONOCOMPARATOR TO READ PHOTO COORDINATES. THE TECHNIQUES EMPLOYED IN USING THE INSTRUMENTS AND THE RESULTS OBTAINED ARE DISCUSSED. IT CONCLUDED THAT ANALYTICAL AERIAL TRIANGULATION IS A SATISFACTORY METHOD OF CONTROL EXTENSION FOR HIGHWAY PHOTOGRAMMETRIC SURVEYS AND THAT THE NEW SKILLS REQUIRED CAN BE MASTERED BY THE AVERAGE HIGHWAY PHOTOGRAMMETRIST. /AUTHOR/
