Title: INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY OF ENGINEERS THROUGH THE USE OF ELECTRONIC COMPUTERS

Abstract: USE IS REVIEWED OF APPLICATIONS OF THE ELECTRONICS COMPUTER TO HIGHWAY ENGINEERING WORK. THE DIGITAL COMPUTER IS REGARDED AS A MEANS OF INCREASING ENGINEERING PRODUCTIVITY IN HIGHWAY WORK. ELECTRONIC COMPUTERS ARE BEING USED FOR SURVEY COMPUTATIONS, COMPUTATION OF CENTER LINE GRADES, EARTHWORK COMPUTATIONS, GEOMETRIC INSTRUCTUAL DESIGN COMPUTATIONS FOR BRIDGES, AND FOR TRAFFIC STUDIES, INCLUDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRIP DESIRE CHARTS, AND THE ASSIGNMENT OF TRAFFIC, PROPOSE NEW ROUTE OR SYSTEM OF ROUTES. SURVEY COMPUTATIONS INVOLVING AN AVERAGE OF MORE THAN 2,000 COURSES PER DAY ARE NOW BEING PERFORMED IN THE ELECTRONIC COMPUTER, COVERING LOCATION, INTER-CHANGE IN BRIDGE DESIGN AND LAYOUT AND RIGHT-OF-WAY TAKINGS. THE TIME REQUIRED FOR THE COMPUTER METHOD IS ABOUT 20 PER-CENT OF THE TIME REQUIRED USING MANUAL METHODS. THE COST IS ABOUT 40 PERCENT OF THE COST BY MANUAL METHODS. A PROGRAM IS BEING DEVELOPED BY THE CALIFORNIA DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS FOR CHECKING AERIAL CONTOUR MAPS USING CHURCH'S 4-POINT ANALYTICAL METHOD. THE USE OF ELECTRONIC COMPUTERS IN THE SOLUTION OF HYDRAULIC PROBLEMS INVOLVED IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING IS BEING EXPLORED IN THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS. THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS IS DEVELOPING A PLAN FOR THE COLLECTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF INFORMATION ON PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND ALLIED SUBJECTS ON A CONTINUING BASIS.
