Title: Achieving Safety and Efficiency through Driver Training
Accession Number: 01157119
Record Type: Component
Availability: American Public Transportation Association 1666 K Street, NW, Suite 1100 Abstract: In order to effectively operate a transit vehicle, a driver must be skilled and dedicated. Developing a well-trained employee not only decreases fuel costs through fuel-efficient driving techniques, but it also improves safety and the passenger experience. This paper will explore driver training and how it can increase cost savings for the employer, increase driver morale through improved route knowledge, decrease vulnerability to accidents, and improve the passenger experience. It will also present techniques for training operators to reduce both fuel consumption and vehicle wear and tear. There have been numerous studies that have tried to correlate and quantify the relationship between driver training and fuel efficiency. These studies have been fairly intense and measured such driving factors as: (1) pulse and coast; (2) RPM; (3) short distance acceleration; (4) smoother breaking and acceleration; (5) hard braking: (6) idling; and (7) anticipation, and more.
