Abstract:

While major progress has been made in the technological capacity of visualization program, insufficient research or guidance is being provided in the appropriate use of visualization methods. The authors define effective visualization in the planning context as those representations that generate public reactions that are similar to the reactions experienced when viewing the project as constructed. The authors argue that only in this case can we ensure that visualization is being used to achieve correct planning objectives. In order to achieve effective visualization, the authors review the literature and present a series of best practices from other planning disciplines. The authors further investigate other visualization techniques that may improve the way stakeholders - experts, policy makers, and the public - are engaged in visualization and, as a result, are able to use visualization in decision making. These methods include visualizing do nothing alternatives, interactive visualization (in time, space and content) and agent based visualization. The authors finally present recommendations for further research and draw conclusions on the steps to increase successful visualization in transportation planning.
