Although LA DOTD began looking at this new method in 1995, it was not until the improved AASHTO Section 10 of these specifications was adopted in 2005 that the department moved to integrate both substructure and superstructure using the LRFD design code. LRFD implementation is in process. Its success hinges on the department’s ability to complete the calibration of resistance factors using local geotechnical practices. Success also depends on the ability to educate both state engineering staff and consultants on the concept and procedures of LRFD. Additionally, the LA DOTD is challenged with adopting a method and procedure that serves both the conventional contracting methods and the new design–build approach. This paper provides a brief summary of the actions taken thus far by the LA DOTD in LRFD implementation.
