Abstract:

Observing the birth of a debate on the weights and dimensions of heavy goods vehicles, the European Commission through its Directorate General for Transport and Environment has commissioned in 2007 a study to investigate the possible effects of changing the directive to allow for longer and/or heavier vehicles in international transport. Within a six-month-period, the consortium in charge of this study has performed an evaluation whom methodology and some results will be presented in this paper. All major effects have been investigated in order to assist the Commission in determining whether it would be sensible to adapt the directive and if yes, in fixing the optimal weights and dimensions of heavy vehicles. The consortium was formed of five entities TML, TNO, LCPC, RWTH Aachen University and SETRA.
