Abstract:

The paper proposes a systematic frequency spectrum analysis approach to improve understanding and measurement of traffic oscillation properties (e.g., periodicity, magnitude) from field data. The approach builds on a set of digital signal processing techniques (e.g., discrete Fourier transform) to effectively distinguish useful oscillation information from noises and nonstationary traffic trends. Compared to conventional time-domain methods, the proposed methodology has the advantage of providing a broader range of accurate information on oscillation properties. Application to real-world traffic data shows that the proposed approach effectively identifies important oscillation properties; insights into the oscillation phenomenon are also discussed.
