Abstract:

This paper addresses a unified approach to traffic state estimation, incident alarm, and detector fault diagnosis based on joint estimation of system states and model parameters. The paper first introduces the related network traffic flow model and utilized approach to traffic state estimation, incident alarm, and detector fault diagnosis. The field testing for these traffic surveillance tasks in the A3 freeway of 100 km between Naples and Salerno in southern Italy is then reported in some detail. The obtained results are quite satisfactory and promising for further future implementations of a real-time freeway network traffic surveillance tool that was recently developed via integration of the reported traffic surveillance approach.
