The challenges were to plow wider and faster in an attempt to increase services without adding personnel. Using wider front plows to clear one 12-ft lane in one pass has proven to reduce the number of passes needed, saved fuel, and reduced labor. Using trailer plows (now known as TowPLows) has allowed one snowplow truck and one operator to clear over 24-ft wide at high speeds, providing a level of performance never before seen in the industry. Previous trucks with wing plows generally cleared a path of 16 ft or less at speeds less than 30 mph.
