Abstract:

This collection of 14 papers addresses the subject of highway facility design. The papers are organized in four parts. Part 1, roadside safety design, discusses the following topics: a guardrail for long-span culverts; steel post, W-beam guardrail systems; low-tension three-strand cable median barriers; and a guardrail W-beam-to-Thrie-beam transition. Part 2, landscape and environmental design and context-sensitive design and solutions, examines these topics: road design in small rural communities; a model for freeway green landscape evaluation; context-sensitive solutions, value engineering, and asset management; integrating value engineering and context-sensitive solutions; use of context-sensitive methods to influence operating speeds; and mainstreaming context-sensitive design in Massachusetts. Part 3, hydrology, hydraulics, and water quality, examines the following: particle separation and hydrologic control by cementitious permeable pavement; abutment scour prediction equations; and porous asphalt overlay impact on storm water quality. Part 4, utilities, contains one paper that discusses outsourcing utility coordination.
