Title: Shifts in Petroleum Transportation
Accession Number: 01055116
Record Type: Component
Abstract: The oil industry uses all forms of transportation in its operations. pipelines, tankers, barges, tank cars and tank trucks. Pipelines are unique because the oil moves in one direction and there are no return pay loads. Thus, pipelines are a cheaper and faster means of transportation because they can operate all year. However, pipelines, trucks, tankers and railroads are all indispensable to the oil industry; in many cases they complement each other. Pipeline statistics are gathered by the Interstate Commerce Commission and the Department of Interior (Bureau of Mines and Geological Survey). Data from production and haulage reports are compiled by member companies of the Association of Oil Pipe Lines and are included.
