Title: More Light on the Headlighting Problem
Accession Number: 01055084
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This paper asks several questions regarding drivers, driving, headlamp mounting positions, effects of alcohol and glare, and which of the various types of headlamps might be best. The authors conducted several tests measuring sight distance with traditional and newer headlamp designs such as the quartz iodine headlamp. The greater the candlepower of the headlamp, the greater the field of vision but there is a substantial increase in glare for oncoming drivers. The authors examine their findings which are intended to cover a beam pattern which is the best compromise between the requirements of seeing distance and glare relief.
