Abstract:

This paper addresses artificial intelligence (AI) applications in transportation. Areas examined include AI methods, a brief history of AI, why AI is appropriate for transportation problems, and AI application areas. This paper serves as an introduction to this circular which focuses on the following five paradigms: knowledge-based systems, neural networks, fuzzy sets, genetic algorithms, and agent-based models.
