The paper begins with a discussion of Britain's railway industry structure and the leadership role provided by the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) in the development of a long-term safety strategy and policy. Discussion continues with a description of RSSB's Human Factors team and Rail Safety Research Program. Tables are included of recently completed and current research projects, as well as a list of proposed research to be initiated in the forthcoming research year (April 2004).
