Abstract:

The anticipated arrival of New Large Aircraft (NLA) such as Airbus A380 calls for the modifications of airport taxiway configurations and the strengthening of four (4) existing taxiway bridges at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA), operated by The Port Authority of NY & NJ (PANYNJ). The strengthening of the bridges includes the replacement of steel girders and concrete deck, and the repair of existing piers and abutments. The replaced girders and decks also improve the roadway clearance beneath the bridges. The project had an aggressive design and construction schedule. The strengthening was to be completed within a given nine-month period of taxiway closure – from September 15, 2004 to June 15, 2005. Since the bridges are located over two airport expressways, the construction had to be carried out during nighttime hours in a manner that interruption to the vehicular traffic was kept to a minimum. Due to these restrictions in working hours, rapid removal and installation of steel girders became a vital consideration. Extra efforts were made to address design details, scheduling, traffic, fabrication issues, construction staging, safety and security issues during the design phase. This enabled the project to proceed smoothly with few questions during the bidding and construction periods. The replacement of bridge decks met the tight schedule constraints with minimum disruptions to traffic at both airport expressways.
