Abstract:

The objective of this study is to determine the condition and strength of neoprene bearing pads that have been in operation for approximately 40 years during which time they have been exposed to the heat and humidity associated with the environs of coastal Florida. In order to test the condition and strength of the pads, durometer and shear tests were performed. These tests revealed that the pads met the original Florida Department of Transportations (FDOT) standards. At the time of decommissioning the performance of the pads was acceptable. Neither the substructure nor superstructure components of the bridge had any indication of distress because of the performance of the pads.
