Title:

THE INTERMODAL ASPECTS OF POINT-TO-POINT CONTAINERIZATION

Accession Number:

Abstract:

The majority of containers moving in the North Atlantic trade routes are being transported in complete point-to-point movements. The shipper loads a container at his shipping dock, closes the doors, and has it moved by a combination of rail, truck, and ship to its destination without the contents being handled again until actual unloading by the consignee. At present, to include air transportation in the point-to-point transport is only possible with one container that meets aircraft weight requirements. This paper discusses the problems that hinder the growth of containerization and the opportunities that offer the chance to improve present methods and provide new ways to make containerization work better. The discussion covers the regulatory, legal and operational aspects of point-to-point containerization.
