Abstract:

The flat, featureless terrain in many areas of southern Africa makes the location of road construction materials difficult. As part of a larger study, various methods were investigated to locate road construction materials. These included traditional techniques with maps, aerial photographs, and satellite images, as well as some innovative techniques, such as looking for geobotanical indicators. This article presents a case study in which botanical indicators were located using ultralight aircraft. The cost of approximately $2,000, compared to a traditional survey totaling more than $8,000, yielded substantial savings. This procedure is applicable to any area with similar conditions, such as the southwestern United States, the Australian interior, or the Middle East.
