Accession Number: 00939831
Record Type: Component
Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: In late 2001, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Executive Committee published a report identifying and assessing the most critical issues in transportation (TR News, Nov.-Dec. 2001, pp 3-11). The 2002 field visits by TRB Technical Activities Division staff confirmed the urgency of these issues for state departments of transportation (DOTs). More important, the visits allowed TRB staff to see firsthand how state DOTs and other transportation organizations are answering the challenges. This article contains summaries of the findings on activities addressing each critical issue. Capsule restatements of the issues are included. The issues cover security, safety, congestion, environment, aging infrastructure, institutional constraints, finance, deregulation, human resources, impact of telecommunications, and barriers to innovation.
