Abstract:

Proposed recommendations of friction coefficients for new pavements are 0.35 at 80 km/h for expressways and 0.40 for 60 km/h for national roads. Skid-resistant mixtures for wearing courses are either open-graded asphalt concrete or gap-graded dense asphalt for general districts, and gap-graded dense asphalt concrete with high filler content for snowy districts. Anti-skidding requirements demand that a new road should have a polished stone value (PSV) of more than 60. Recommendations for skid-resistance standards are presented, and comments are made on standard asphaltic concrete for skid-resistant pavements, the skid-resistance and stripping phenomena of open-graded asphalt concrete and the properties of gap-graded dense asphaltic concrete. Figures illustrate the typical structure of asphalt pavement for general national highways, the skid resistance on various surface mixtures, abrasion resistance between continuous and gap grading, and abrasion loss on experimental pavement during winter. Tables are presented for standard gradation values of asphalt concrete for skid-resistant pavements, the coefficient of skid-resistance and its percent decrease with speed increase on various surface mixtures, permeability on open-graded asphalt concrete, and pavement stripping due to permeated water.
