Title: APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE OF PAVEMENT SURFACE PROPERTIES IN FRANCE
Accession Number: 00173546
Record Type: Component
Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The prevention of skidding accidents is discussed with regard to the case of general network sections, and to high accident locations. With regard to the general network sections, it is noted that various measuring devices and investigation methods have made it possible to determine sections which exhibit either low friction coefficient values or points favoring accumulation of water heights. Techniques employed to obtain surface roughness are outlined. Requirements relating to the polished stone value, surface dressings and deep grooving of cement concrete pavements are listed. The detection of accident-prone areas is made by examination of bodily injury records and a data processing program. Identification of such locations is followed by a detailed, multidisciplinary study involving specialists in human engineering, psychology, highway engineering, vehicle dynamics etc. Skid-resistant surfaces which have been used include those involving special binders, natural aggregates with very good accelerated polishing characteristics and hardness, or artificial aggregates such as bauxite or calcined bauxite.
