Title: CLOSING REMARKS OF THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL SKID PREVENTION CONFERENCE

Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Three areas of research figured prominently in the contributions and discussions at the conference: legal aspects about accidents and wet pavements, international standardization, and the strategy adopted by authorities responsible for reducing the number and the seriousness of those accidents. With regard to the first point, it is noted that highway engineers are preoccupied by the liability incurred by contractors, civil servants or highway administrators. The 1975 Committee on Slipperiness and Evenness considered the subject and outlined tehcnical aspects liable to enlighten the judgements of the courts. With regard to the second point, the same committee also made recommendations concerning the specifications for standard tires fitted to full-scale skid-measuring devices. It is noted, with regard to the third point, that comparison of strategies and the methods used in different countries to reduce skidding accidents on wet pavements will be of interest. Included in these strategies are preventive action through sytematic control, analysis of accident records, and measures such as signing, resurfacing, etc. The conference program also highlighted human factors such as those which control driver behavior.
