Title: ADVANCED INTERSECTION CONTROLLER RESPONSE TO RAILROAD PREEMPTION
Accession Number: 00822618
Record Type: Monograph
Availability: National Technical Information Service 5301 Shawnee Road Abstract: This High-Speed Rail (HSR) Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) project was to develop an improved algorithm for the integration and sequencing of highway intersection signal controllers adjacent to railroad grade crossings with preemptive train detection signals. The objective was to safely and efficiently clear crossings of highway and pedestrian traffic prior to train arrival. The controller logic was developed and tested under various simulated scenarios. The preemption algorithm was developed, tested and evaluated, using simulation software that models various case studies representing a range of crossing scenarios. Field testing at a signalized intersection adjacent to a grade crossing and a final report have been completed. Field test results revealed several problems with real-world implementation. Principal among these was the substantial variability between predicted and actual arrival time of trains at crossings. This caused problems because the Doppler radar system made only a single-point estimate of train arrival speed that did not account for subsequent acceleration or deceleration. Further development of this concept would require the capability for continuous updates of train speed and arrival predictions.
