Accession Number: 00974952
Record Type: Component
Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to address the increasing older-driver fatality rate from the vehicle perspective. In other words, this paper is an overview of past, current, and future vehicle concepts and initiatives that may have the potential for mitigating both the frequency and the injury severity of older-driver crashes. Occupant protection concepts are grouped into three categories: crash avoidance, crashworthiness, and postcrash assistance. Discussion of these concepts is followed by a discussion on recent advances in occupant protection, including advances in safety belts, airbags, side impact protection, rear impact protection, and rollover protection. Comments on future restraint concepts concludes the discussion.
