The world of drugs, both licit and illicit, changes continually with the result that research inevitably lags behind the usage curve. Also, because research is driven largely by society's perceptions of the illicit drugs which are more problematic, as well as by the pharmaceutical industry's requirement for data for Federal Drug Administration applications, it often proceeds somewhat haphazardly and incompletely. This paper focuses on just some of the mismatch between what is known and what needs to be known.
