Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Find a library where document is available Abstract: Following a review of the success of the 1980s and 1990s in the campaign against impaired driving, this paper points out that still, some 16,189 persons died in alcohol-related crashes in 1997 and suggests that success beyond this point will likely require additional research to support the development of new initiatives. Some specific questions are asked concerning the nature of future research, a discussion is presented on the "prevention paradox," and possible future initiatives are outlined.
