Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: This synthesis will be of interest to transit agency professionals, consultants who work with them, as well as vendors, in dealing with on-board vehicle surveillance technologies. The report describes the state of the practice concerning the use of on-board vehicle surveillance technologies designed to address both safety and security issues at public transportation agencies. It includes a review of emerging technologies likely to be implemented in the near future in the transit environment. Issues and shortcomings with surveillance are addressed, including financial, legal, maintenance, and procedural concerns. This document touches on the successes and failures of systems in meeting both system needs and product descriptions. This document integrates information from a review of applicable literature and ongoing research and applications of surveillance technologies used on transit vehicles and survey responses from selected transit agencies, supplemented by discussions with product vendors, transit agency representatives, and industry experts.
