Abstract:

The operating speed for applying rock salt with conventional spreaders is limited by material loss caused by bouncing or sliding across the pavement. This results in excess salt loss to the roadside environment, traffic congestion during winter operations, and unnecessarily long spreading cycle times. Equipment designed to control the velocity at which material hits the pavement and to prewet winter materials has been developed to solve these problems. Tests were undertaken to examine the feasibility of high-speed material application on bare pavement by using traditional and newly developed methods and equipment. The study included measurement of spread patterns and material loss against operating speeds using ground-speed spreaders and using prewet materials, in comparison with conventional methods. Ground-speed spreaders and prewetting are recommended to permit high-speed spreading of salt in a windrow pattern on bare pavement.
