Abstract:

Legendary transportation leader Frank Turner (1909-1999) crafted one of the great legacies of the "American century," an efficient network of state-of-the-art roadways traversing the United States. Members of the Transportation Research Board's Committee on Transportation History, many of whom were personal friends, colleagues, and proteges, recently examined Turner's "place in history." This article by Jonathan L. Gifford, Associate Professor, Public Management and Policy, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, discusses his work with Frank Turner in connection with a retrospective study of the Interstate system in the late 1980s.
