Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Legendary transportation leader Frank Turner (1909-1999) crafted one of the great legacies of the "American century," an efficient network of state-of-the-art roadways traversing the United States. Members of the Transportation Research Board's Committee on Transportation History, many of whom were personal friends, colleagues, and proteges, recently examined Turner's "place in history." This article by Bruce E. Seely, Professor of History, Science, Technology, and Society, Michigan Technological University, Houghton, presents a brief history of Turner's life, from his early years at Texas A&M University to leadership of the Bureau of Public Roads and then Federal Highway Administrator.
