Title: WORKSHOP TOPIC 3. AGGREGATES AND OTHER MATERIALS
Accession Number: 00149915

Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: An attempt was made to evaluate the energy inputs of the design, production and use of aggregates and to consider the cost analysis of each item. The workshop discussion revealed a need for the optimization of design for aggregates to make the best use of local materials. The need was also noted for the effort necessary to produce a specified material from a particular source; the acceptance of a gradation allowing a somewhat larger size aggregate will in many cases reduce crashing costs and yield additional benefits such as lower binder requirements. In many situations, staged construction or larger aggregate production contracts may fit into the scheme of costs and energy conservation. Recycling materials that have often been wasted is another consideration. Other conservation measures are listed. These measures relate to: uniform specifications; the use of the lightweight aggregate; base and surfacing courses in thick lifts; density requirements for base and surfacing courses; and payment by plans. Innovations that may be considered are: recycling asphalt pavements; salvaging PCC; and end-product specifications including statistical acceptance. Research needs in the area of aggregate production are included.
