Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The U.S. transportation system is close to capacity in a booming economy. Yet a highly efficient transportation system is not necessarily good for the U.S. military, which depends on commercial shipping. The trend of minimizing excess capacity in the transportation system has raised potential problems for the nation's defense. Representatives from the commercial transportation industry and the Department of Defense (DOD) participated in panel discussions at two Transportation Research Board (TRB) conferences organized by the TRB Committee on Military Transportation. Insights from these discussions are presented in this article, covering aspects of commercial trucking, the rail industry, air carriers, ocean carriers, and ports. DOD's contributions to these discussions provide insight on past military use of commercial transportation, current issues such as specialty drivers and container handling, nonsystem issues such as foreign policy, and new information technology capabilities.
