With the rapid advancement of educational technologies, there is an eagerness to develop new ways to impart ITS knowledge. A survey of state departments of transportation was performed to identify the needs for ITS education and assess the potential for delivery of this material through educational technology. A review of pertinent literature related to adult learning and its implications was conducted. Recommendations to guide the design of educational materials are presented. A taxonomy designed to aid ITS professionals in identifying available educational materials by competency area, knowledge acquisition needs, and available resources is proposed.
