Abstract:

Pavements for low-volume roads requires good engineering and good judgment in the application of the soil and aggregate data to hold costs to a minimum. It is essential that the necessary data be made available to designers so that they can exercise care in the design. A discussion of the need related to soils data and subgrade strength parameters together with traffic analysis and construction considerations is given based on the author's experience in the intermountain West. Specifications should recognize innovations possible from the use of roadside aggregate and borrow sources and construction procedures.
