Abstract:

This paper summarizes the beneficial influence of lime on the plasticity, volume change, stress-strain response, and durability properties of fine-grained soils. The use of soil-lime mixtures as pavement layers is considered. Static load-deflection behavior of soil-lime pavements is discussed, and typical load-deflection response and ultimate load-carrying capacity response data are presented. Field performance data are presented to illustrate the successful use of soil-lime pavement layers. Various procedures for determining soil-lime pavement layer thicknesses are considered. It is concluded that lime stabilization can improve the engineering properties of fine-grained soils to the extent that the soil-lime mixture can be used as a pavement material for the construction of low-volume roads. Consideration should be directed to (a) mixture design procedures, (b) establishment of mixture quality criteria for various applications, (c) thickness design, and (d) materials and construction specifications to ensure a successful project.
