Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The Independent Transportation Network (trademark) (ITN) is a nonprofit transportation program for seniors that uses automobiles and both paid and volunteer drivers to provide door-to-door service offering the comfort and convenience of travel by private vehicle. Building on knowledge gained through research and development funded by the American Association of Retired Persons and one of the Transportation Research Board's Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis programs (Transit-IDEA), the ITN is now midway through a Federal Transit Administration Deployment grant to build a model and replication tools for economically sustainable, consumer-oriented transit for older persons. This article discusses the problem (i.e., that the nation's transportation system does not meet the mobility needs of normally aging people), the solution (i.e., a transportation system that does meet the mobility needs of normally aging people), and the model program designed to address the problem (i.e., the ITN). Also discussed are the Federal Transit Administration Deployment grant for the ITN and the National Endowment for Transportation for Seniors (NETS). NETS is an overarching, national organization to link ITNs together.
