Abstract: The paper recognizes the increasing demand placed on highways, even as various urban public transit modes are greatly expanded. The paper focuses attention on advanced modern technologies for monitoring, guiding, and coordinating highway construction and maintenance equipment. Some of the technologies discussed are inertial navigation, active beacon navigation system, the Global Positioning System, and ground based radio frequency systems.
