To meet these challenges, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) operates a comprehensive research and development program through which it has made many valuable investments in technological innovation. These investments have contributed significantly to the safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of the U.S. aviation system. This article highlights the following FAA research and development program areas: new air-traffic control technologies; aircraft and airport safety; human performance; aviation security; and future challenges.
