Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Progress toward optimizing highway safety has been hindered by a lack of consistent, high-quality data for use by highway designers. National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 17-12, Improved Safety Information To Support Highway Design, was undertaken to address issues associated with the availability and use of safety data to support highway design activities. The project led to important insights on the role of safety analysis in the highway design process, current barriers to effective use of highway safety data, and strategies that can be used to overcome these barriers. These insights are discussed in this article.
