Abstract:

Transportation planners will be addressing new issues and concerns during the next 20 years, while still having to deal with the problems of congestion and mobility that have been their focus for the past several decades. This article reviews ten key issues that are likely to demand the attention of transportation decision makers during the next two decades: demographic change; economic production and market forces; multimodal perspective; operations perspective; role of technology; sense of community; laying the groundwork for pricing; putting teeth into growth management; transportation planning within a sustainability framework; and accountability for decision making and planning.
