Abstract:

Public transportation management and planning is discussed from the board member's perspective. The author's comments are based on his experience as a former Los Angeles County Transportation Commission board member. Among the topics commented on are training (board members are helped by feeding their tremendous egos), out-of-town trips (it is extremely useful to actually see the potential of the transit system under consideration), the need to celebrate successes, media relations, new ways of doing business (telecommunications and information delivery), and partnerships.
