Abstract:

This article gives an overview of the development of updated procedures for the safety performance evaluation of highway features in the United States. It begins with the establishment of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) in 1962 as a means for the states to address common research needs. The following discussion provides a chronological account of the various NCHRP projects that addressed the performance evaluation of highway appurtenances, including the NCHRP Reports that were issued.
