Abstract:

The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) project, SHRP-A003A, has introduced new test methods and procedures that can be easily implemented in pavement design and in the development of performance-based specifications. The basic concepts behind the design of a high traffic, high performance pavement are presented, and the concept of the performance point as a methodology to develop site-specific contract specifications is introduced. This permits a connection between performance observations, structural pavement design, and mix design. This project is the first application of performance-based specifications based on fatigue tests and repetitive simple shear tests at constant height.
