Abstract:

This paper describes prior research on alternative sanctions for driving while intoxicated (DWI) offenders, then describes current research being conducted at Mid-America Research on the following three alternative sanctions programs for repeat DWI offenders: Intensive Supervision Probation - The Milwaukee County Pretrial Intoxicated Driver Intervention Project; Electronic Monitoring - The Los Angeles County Electronic Monitoring/Home Detention Program; and Weekend Intervention Program - The Wright State University Weekend Intervention Program. The overall objective of Mid-America's evaluation is to determine the effectiveness of each alternative sanctions program as an alternative to jail.
