Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: This paper on railroad freight service management is presented in six sections. The first section, Customer Requirements and Logistics Costs, indicates which aspects of freight service are important and why. The next section, Origin-Destination Analysis, presents an overview of typical service levels, which shows that there does seem to be considerable opportunity for improving service. In section three, Systems Analysis, the basics of service and capacity management are outlined. Broad options for improving service management are identified in section four, Improvement Strategies. Section five, Cross-Cutting Themes, includes a discussion of five themes: future market requirements, productivity, advanced technology, human factors, and safety. The final section presents the Summary and Conclusions.
