A total of 2,613 completed questionnaire forms were returned from 72 survey locations. The results indicated that bicycles in Shanghai are used by commuters irrespective of sex or age. The majority of Shanghainese rode their bicycles at least 6 days per week as a form of private transport for various purposes, but mainly for work. Despite some dangers, the majority of users still used their bikes because of the convenience and reliability of this transport mode. Moreover, they indicated that they are not willing to shift to the bus system unless bus services are improved.
