Abstract:

The control of roadway traffic is essential to the safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians. It traditionally has been the domain of the traffic engineer, but human factors has come to play an increasing part in the design and use of traffic control devices over the past three decades. This workshop presentation examines the need to know about drivers' limitations in information processing and behavior as these relate to traffic control, gives a brief review of some relevant literature, and identifies future research needs.
